How will you change the world? That was the question my grandmother, Maurine Kinghorn Mugleston, left with my brothers, sister and me in a family gathering in my childhood home in University Place, Washington. She had just related the story of John Lathrop a direct ancestor and an early English-Christian reformer. (Read his story in Exiled: the Story of John Lathrop.) Though I was only 12 at that time, I distinctly remember feeling committed to make my mark in life and to bless the lives of others. My grandmother passed away a few months after that event. It has been 15 years, but I will always remember her words.
Entrepreneurship is about changing the world. Guy Kiyosaki, in his bestseller The Art of the Start, describes the core component of entrepreneurship as “making meaning.” He’s spot on. I believe that one of the greatest outcomes of entrepreneurship is service to mankind—products or services that make life easier, engage our creativity, and increase our awareness of others. Look at the lights, pictures, and walls that surround you. Feel the clothing that sits on your shoulders. These are the fruits of entrepreneurial systems that bless your lives daily. But, not all entrepreneurial systems are created equal.
I have long felt that Family History is one of the greatest expressions of entrepreneurship and service. I believe that computers were developed to fill Family History needs. During the Millennium, we will be engaged in Family History work from nine to five with our family members from all corners of the globe. 1,000 years will be spent creating “the book” talked about in D&C 128 (v. 24) that will be presented to God—a canon containing the records, work and lives of all mankind. I hope to write a few pages.
In this issue, we highlight five entrepreneurs who are writing chapters in the book of life. Paul Allen, Janet Hovorka, Russ Wilding, John Vilburn, and Alan Eaton are changing the face of Family History. One Facebook click at a time, Paul Allen is connecting and strengthening families, both members and those of other faiths, through his most recent venture FamilyLink.com. Alan Eaton is striving to make genealogy easier through his new project called OneClickTempleTrip.com. After submitting your genealogy on his site, his system will comb your data and present a name for you to take to the nearest temple. Ask yourself, “Would I do Family History work if it took only one click to find a family member that I could take to the temple?”
These entrepreneurs—Paul, Janet, Russ, John and Alan—are changing the world and I invite you to read their fascinating stories. Until we meet again two months from now, I would like you all to ponder the question my grandmother asked me:
How will you change the world?
